Is CBD Oil Right for Your Dog?

October 8, 2018

You may have noticed Cannibidiol (CBD) shops popping up here and there, offering alternative medicine solutions for a litany of physical ailments. But did you know that CBD can also have positive benefits for your dog? If your furry friend is suffering from a chronic pain or illness, CBD oil might be just what they need to help ease the pain or help with recovery. Let’s look into if CBD oil is the right choice for your dog.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is a naturally occurring element of the cannabis plant, and it can be taken in many ways to receive the health benefits. When people are prescribed medical marijuana, it is CBD that is doing the heavy lifting.

You might think, “I don’t want my dog to get high! I would never give them CBD oil!”

The central benefit of CBD oil is that it contains little to no THC, which is the component that causes the hallucinogenic effects of marijuana. CBD oil can give your dog many of the benefits of medical marijuana without those side effects.

What is it used for?

There are many symptoms and illnesses that CBD oil can help with, but not every dog will respond the same way to the medication. The main things that CBD oil will be prescribed for are ailments like anxiety, arthritis, cancer, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, nausea, seizures, and stress. Unlike many other pain medications, there are no severe side effects provided the proper dosage of CBD oil is used (barring extremely rare circumstances).

How do I give my dog CBD oil?

CBD oil is generally taken orally, either by adding drops of the oil to food or treats or by purchasing treats that have the oil cooked into them. In some cases, it can also be administered topically, to help ease pain in specific areas. However, finding the proper dosage can be tricky. Because of some of the thorny issues surrounding CBD, some of the research and benefits will take some digging to find. As is the case with any new treatment, talk to your vet and get a professional opinion about whether CBD oil is the right move for your dog. The product is becoming a viable enough alternative that, even if they cannot directly answer your questions, they will most likely be able to direct you somewhere that can.

What are the potential risks?

Like any new medication, keep a close eye on your dog when you first start administering CBD oil. There are very few severe side effects or reactions with other medications that are known, but it is always a good idea to keep an eye out.

The main thing to watch out for is for dubious information surrounding CBD oil. There can be a lot of potential benefits, but watch out for “miracle cure” type claims or advice from completely unqualified sources. Always consult with your vet before trying new treatments with your dog, and be prepared to accept the fact that not everyone (be it person or pooch) responds to medication in the same way.
