Doggie Date Ideas

January 28, 2019

With spring approaching, love is in the air. For many of us, there’s no one we’d rather spend it with than our canine companion. Whether it’s just you and your dog, or you decide to bring your significant other along as a third wheel, here are a few ideas for enjoying date night with your dog.

Explore someplace new

One of the best ways to strengthen a relationship is to experience new things with one another, and one of the best ways to do that is to try something completely unknown. Pack up some supplies and go exploring with your pooch - find a new neighborhood to wander around, or go explore a new park. Walk through a shopping center and see which stores are dog friendly - you’d be surprised, provided your dog is moderately-well behaved, with how many stores keep dog treats by the register. Your dog will love the exploration, and it will zonk them out for a good while afterwards.

Find a dog friendly patio

If a nice meal is more your speed (and the weather is cooperating), you may also be pleased to discover how many restaurants have dog-friendly patios. Obviously, you’ll want to call ahead and make sure that dogs are permitted, or you’ll be able to tell if it’s a place you travel past frequently - keep your eyes peeled and see if there are other dogs hanging outside. Find some happy hours or food specials you’d like to try and go check it out. It will help socialize your dog a bit, and your lovable canine will be an easy ice breaker with other patrons.

Create a special picnic meal at home

If you’re worried about your dog’s ability to behave around strangers and food in public, you could always do a special meal at home. Do some searching around the internet for a main dish that you’d like to try, pick up the ingredients you need, and get to it. Your dog will love the smells in the kitchen, and, if they are really behaving themselves, maybe you could even sneak them a few bites of some dog-safe ingredients as you’re putting everything together. When it’s all said and done, roll out a blanket (inside or outside, weather dependent) and bring out a few dishes so you can sit at your dogs level and enjoy a special meal together.

Work on a home improvement project

This one is sort of a two-parter. The main fun for your four-legged friend will be coming to the hardware store with you. Places like Lowe’s and Home Depot are perfect places to wander with your dog - they are big, full of new smells, and jam-packed with exciting things happening. Go pick up the things you need for your project with your dog - it will wear them out, which will help keep them calm whenever you’re hammering holes in the walls or working with power tools. This idea has a few bonuses - for one, you’ll just want to relax on the couch with your dog afterwards and celebrate a job well done. Second, you’ll probably have to make multiple trips to the hardware store - it’s nearly impossible to foresee exactly everything you will need in your first trip.

Even though we love our dogs, we certainly don’t want our houses to smell like them. Keep a steady supply of Bio-nihilator around to help clean up any accidents they might have. And don’t hold it against them if they do have an accident - they love you too.
